Ivy - cutting back
5 Answers
I have 3 Ivy plants growing on the back of my house. They have reached the guttering and are now growing up on the roof. How hard can I cut them back without destroying them? Could I cut them back to the level of the gutter? any hints would be helpful, thanks.

In fact, I'd try cutting them back to just a few inches above the source of the vine. At least here in the U.S. the ivy's can damage the paint and/or mortar of brick work. If they reach the level of the roof line there's a good chance they'll find their way into the attic. It doesn't take much of a crack or hole for them to get inside... If you cut them back harshly, they'll be back in a couple of years time.
