Ivy - cutting back

I have 3 Ivy plants growing on the back of my house. They have reached the guttering and are now growing up on the roof. How hard can I cut them back without destroying them? Could I cut them back to the level of the gutter? any hints would be helpful, thanks.

I'd cut them back more severely than that. In fact, I'd try cutting them back to just a few inches above the source of the vine. At least here in the U.S. the ivy's can damage the paint and/or mortar of brick work. If they reach the level of the roof line there's a good chance they'll find their way into the attic. It doesn't take much of a crack or hole for them to get inside... If you cut them back harshly, they'll be back in a couple of years time.

You can cut them right back i do this with mine 3 times a year. At first you may think ive took to much off but within a couple of days it will start growing again

Cut them right back to just above the first set of leaves on each stem - if you have time. If not just hack them so there are some leaves left. Ivy is tough and there's no way you'll kill it off unless you poison it!

thanks for the advice. I've borrowed a pair of ladders from a neighbour so let's hope I don't fall off!!

If you can stand the mess just cut it for now- if you are going for the mega chop option. Let it wither for a few weeks then it is quite easy to pull off in a couple of sharp tugs. I like young looking green ivy and cut it back harshly every year.
