Today I purchased a new dual gas cooker and was told that I need to pay 100 to have it installed as it is the law now.

I fully understand that safety is important but it is a matter of simply plugging a standard plug in and a gas hose. I have been pulling my cooker out for cleaning and repairs for the last 22 years and it takes about 10 seconds to plug in. I have never had a problem.

Is it just me??

No not just you ...my brother had this problem recently. He ordered a new gas cooker when he moved and they turned up with it and promptly took it away again saying that they couldn't leave it without the paperwork to say that a registered gas fitter would be coming to install it and it had to be inspected . His argument was the same as yours .But they flatly refused to deliver it and he had to go through all this rigmarole and pay to have it installed. We will have regulations to replace a light bulb soon !
To plumb in a gas cooker you have to be a competent person - best example of this is a tradesman who is CORGI registered in a gas cooker - you can invalidate your house insurance if you DIY -Gas can be potentionally lethal - dont muck about with it.
Yes but come on here woodchopper.

These are bayonet fittings - push and twist we're not talking about putting in a new point.

It's all to do with who takes on the liabilities if any thing should go wrong there are different types of bayonet Shane but in Big AT case it sounds like he is going to remove the flex from old and screw it into new ? that is the part that woodchopper is referring to but I do think that there could be some form of dispensations whereby major outlet suppliers could train to obtain competence in connections of this kind with certificates etc
After all said and done a plumber is allowed to install a shower and connect the electrical wires that is part of part "P"
I've had two installed in the last year and both times the fitter put two chains on the back of the ovens (to prevent them falling over or pulling at the connection) and also did a gas test on the property to check for leaks which otherwise wouldn't have been done.
It is not just the fact that you plug it in, A twist and a turn yeah simple is'nt it ??? But who is to say that the cooker and its installation is sound. Even a new cooker has to be checked for safety as it could quite easily have been knocked or damaged in transit and even though brand new could be dangerous. The pipes and bayonett may also be dangerous. We do not only just plug in and walk away we check the whole gas installation is sound and safe aswell as checking and certifying the new cooker has been installed and is safe to use. But I agree 100 is real steep I would arrange for an independaent CORGI gasman to fit it and certify the installation as it should only cost you the price of a call out and the registration fees so you should be payuing no more than 50 to 60 depending on whereabouts you live.
where i bought my cooker comet /curry,s they arrange for corgi fitter who check the system install the cooker put regulation chains on only cost about 20 extra .approx 2 yrs ago may cost a bit more now.
