how can i scan the image in its original size into my page or do i have to draw a pic twice the size before i try and inset it?

You should be able to resize it within the application.. Click on the picture and move the cursor to the lower right hand corner. You chould see a small box in the corner. Click on it and hold the button down. Drag the corner of the box to the size you need it to be.
What resolution are you scanning the image? If you intend printing (litho or high quality digital) then you should be scanning at 300ppi at a minimum. If you scan at this resolution and the image comes out in your page layout smaller then you can resize the image in the page without losing resolution.
