Cancer on the News.

Just seen on the news that most of the new drugs created in the last 6 years are unavailable on the NHS due to costs. My question is, why have so many people bothered to donate money to cancer research. Everytime I offer my charitable services on here, the most popular response in Cancer Research etc. However it seems only the super rich (i.e 50k per year for treatment) and the drug companies are the ones getting any benefit.
And the second part of my question, which is a further slur on smokers. One of the main arguments from smokers about the NHS is saying that at �5+ a packet they are paying for the NHS. Well, this is clearly not the case is it? I know lung and throat cancer are only two of many, but surely the time is now right to price cigarettes at �15-20 per packet.
And finally, as I understand cancer is destructive within families, should the NHS stop all these unnecessisary sex-change operations, treatments for fatties, and wasting money on muslims and immigrants and spend their money on cancer treatments??

JoeW - like you, I'm incensed by this latest news & have been mumbling away to myself about what the government wastes so much money on! (Could be any government of course)!
Having lost dear ones to cancer - most of which did not smoke, but paid tax & full N.I. contributions all their lives - surely folk like these deserve preferential treatment.....I'll stop there!

I personally do not support large charities as Pa_ul rightly says the money goes to admin and advertising costs,
personally I would donate to a local good cause where you see your money do some good
I do think that charging �15-20 pounds for cigarettes would certainly make more people quit. However I dont think the government wants everyone to quit as it would lose a lot of revenue.
It would be great if money and research was spent in fighting diseases like cancer and heart disease instead of working on state of the art face lift procedures and age reversal rubbish

it's sickening to know there are treatments which could vastly improve and/or extend lives and the govt says 'sorry,it costs too much'. This applies to any disease as much as cancer.
this is a hard subject for me to write about at the moment as cancer is affecting my family so directly. You start to wonder, when they say they cannot cure my father or grandfather, do they really mean they can't afford to cure it. As Smudge said, ( nice to see you again Smudge) neither my father or grandfather have ever smoked, both worked all their lives and now this.

As long as Muslims, fatties et al don't have pay relevant tax/N.I. contributions to subsidise the people who will fall in yer suitable candidates parameters. It sounds like a really well thought out programme - while your at it can I have the Police ( haven't called them in ages) and education portion of my council tax back as soon I will be paying for all of the kids out of my own pocket any way! The PM spot is becoming avaliable you could while away the afternoons making lots of written suggestions to the new incummbent, don't forget to use your green biro, and write more than three letters to get on the 'special list'. lol
one thing that annoys me - about any of the larger charities for that matter - is them sending you a pen to fill in your donation form, and then saying, ''can you return it even if you aren't donating''...
i mean, who doesn't have their own pens, that they need to be sent one?
i can't see many people returning the pen without donating - so the pen is often just kept anyway.... which is of course the point of sending them out - hoping people won't dare just return the pen.
they are not good advertising either, because if you are going to donate, you will - catching a glimpse of a pen with a charity name on it is not going to encourage you.
i know they are only cheap, half filled pens, but they have their logo printed on and they must have to make thousands - perhaps even millions of them, only for them to be kept or binned.
i seem to have tons of them - i can't afford to donate to every single envelope i receive, and give what i can when i can.
as for returning them, i would rather put the 30-odd pence in a box than spend it on a stamp for a useless pen.
it is a ridiculous waste of money that should be spent on more important things.

Cancer why we are still dying to know the truth.. by Philip Day.
God forbid i ever get it, this is what i will follow! its a hard read, but i have read it on more than one occasion. and i have a few friends who have used this book, but it gives you an insight into the drug companies etc!
