Why won't my Honeysuckle & Clematis flower
2 Answers
I took a cutting from a flowering honeysuckle about 6 years ago and it has grown really well, but it has only ever had one flower on it. I have cut it back and left it grow without pruning but still no flowers. Can anyone tell me why or suggest what to do to make it flower. The same thing has happened to a yellow flowering clematis that my neigbour gave me, any suggestions??

As for the clematis, was it a tangutica with little yellow bell-like flowers that hang downwards? Clematis are hungry plants and require a fair bit of water and food to keep them happy. Saying that though the tanguticas are usually not very fussy. It could also be that you are pruning it at the wrong time too - if it IS a tangutica it should be pruned down to about 18 inches from the ground in early spring which will stimulate new growth. Feed during the growing season with anything like well-rotted manure (ensure you dig it in well), blood fish & bone, or home-made compost or leaf-mould. You can also use liquid fertilizers like rose or tomato food as a quick fix.
I hope this helps a bit

Thanks Plocket. Both Honeysuckle and Clematis are in a bright sunny position and niether one has ever had any buds.
I don't know what the flower looks like on the clematis because it has never flowered. I have pruned both plants at different times of the year in hope that a flower will appear but nothing seems to work. I have also tried various plant foods, apart from blood fish & bone, so I will give it a go. Cheers
