The Duke of Buckingham had it built in 1702/03 when it was known as Buckingham House. It was bought by George III for his wife (Queen Charlotte) in 1761 and was renamed "Queen's House". Queen Victoria was the first monarch to take up residence there and it was known as Buckingham Palace at or about that time
