Child locators

In view of the little girl that has been abducted in Portugal isn't it time that moden day technoligy could be utilzed to make it easier to track down a missing child.

Perhaps a chip could be implanted at birth, that was trackable by satalite? This chip could be removed at the age of 16, to prevent the state from knowing our every movements.

This may sound like some mad futuristic idea, but our pets can have chips implanted I know this only identifies the pet, but could this type of thing also be a locator?

I do believe you can buy child locators that fit as a braclet, that warn the parent if the child wanders off or is abducted. Why are these devices not made more readly available?

Smacks a bit too much like 1984 for my liking.

Don't know about the defence industry but the smallest gps trackers available to the public at the moment are around the size of a cars key fob...not something I'd want in my body let alone my childs. Also how would you keep it charged up?

With the lack of anything else to read at Breakfast this morning, I picked up Mr Noir's computer weekly mag.

There is an article about a product called loca8ter which you affix a tag to anything you dont want to lose (keys, child, wallet etc) and you have anthor device. You can manually set it -it seems- to sound an alarm if said object or you moves out of a the tags radius.

Whilst this does seem slightly OTT cant help but wonder if a descretly hidden tag on a sleeping child sets your alarm off when they move from your room 15 yards away, to 15.1 yards ??

It doesn't say how big these tags are or how much they cost though.

Spose its coming up with a solution that a potential child abductor is unaware of? how about a tiny microchip that could be painted on like clear nail varnish on any part of the body?

Yes a chip would help parents more. They could let them out of their sight for even lengthier periods of time knowing that someone else could track them down and return them home (Sorry to their address) It makes me so cross that parents are not willing to give up a few pleasures -such as eating out as a couple- without either considering a reliable babysitter or THEIR CHILDRENS NEEDS. Parents have a duty of care to be delivered with love....don't they?

I think we have people trying to come to a solution to a problem that needn't exist. Children need to be looked after 24 hours a day. They are children and their parents are expected to care for them-even on holiday.As a person who is a parent and has been 'In loco parentis' in various capacities since 1973 I think Maddie's parents are lucky not to be charged with neglect.Just because they are respected professionals every one is tip toe-ing around the issue that these three very young children have been left alone in a strange building on a regular basis.
