Yes, we've an Aunt (age 67) who was diagnosed with the Syndrome a few years ago. She was eventually hospitalized since it progressed into her upper chest and began to affect her breathing ability. She was partially paralyzed for about two weeks. She recovered fully and is doing well today with little discernible remaining weakness. In her case the onset happened following an acute upper respiratory inflammation and single lobe pneumonia. Here in the U.S., the syndrome is rare, however, afflicting only about one person in 100,000, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
I could be that your blood sugars dropped I have had this before and even though you are offered a cup of tea and a buscuit sometimes its not enough sugar to keep you from feeling dizzy or sick i used to get a little tremberly after but not before and it was a drop in sugar level easy solved with energy drink.
please ignore above clicked on wrong question. sorry
Have treated patients with this. normally presents as a post viral thing (i.e. after flu). Tends to affect the feet first (numbness, weakness, pins and needles) and then can work its way up the body (stops in different places for different patients). In more severe cases, can work its way up the body to affect the chest, and these patients require ventilation through a life support machine. Recovery is variable, some patients make a complete recovery, some are left with residual weakness, and a few are left requiring ventilatory support.
If they think your sister-in-law has this, they will monitor her closely. Wishing her all the best.
hi schlomo, my friend aged 23 was diagnosed with this last year and ended up in hospital for a month. she has made a complete recovery with no lasting effects. it started in her legs and worked it's way up to her chest. she also had symptoms such as half of her face was paralysed temporarily. she had to have a lumbar puncture and lots of very strong anti-biotics but eventually she got back to a full picture of health.
very best wishes to your sister in law .
