Gagging on saltwater

My mum always tells me to gargle saltwater to kill germs when I have a very sore throat but I never use salt and hate the taste of it. I tried to gargle saltwater today though and immediately started retching. I also noticed that my throat seemed to be going into spasms and tightened for a bit , which worried me because i've never had a reaction to salt before. Is it possible to be allergic to salt ? I only used a small amount of salt as well , so it's not as if I was gagging because of the quantity used.

I don't think you were retching because of an allergy. More likely, because you dont like salt and you knew you weren't going to like it before you started, so it's more psychological. It is horrible yes. You could try gargling with soluble asprin-but that tastes yuk as well. Just try to relax and think what good it's doing you and you might have more success. Or try ultra chloraseptic spray instead. No gargling involved.just deadens your throat so you feel less pain!
