I suspect the OP is a US citizen where they do not need passports to visit the Caribbean islands or Mexico - but this is now changing and I believe as of Jan 1st 2008 all US citiizens will need a passport - http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_222 3.html

Fact is that currently 72% of Americans do not have a passport!
