How is it that each chapter of this novel is like "descending into a worst level of hell"?

Thats kids for ya!
With each chapter, the outlook becomes bleaker and bleaker for the boys on the island. Reality and sense desert them as what they have come to see as civilisation descends into madness and chaos. They go through the hell of lonliness, the purgatory of madness and are finally redeemed by the adults at the end.
Sounds like an episode of Eastenders.
