Do the French have an equivalent National Trust /Heritage membership for overseas visitors wishing to view churches,castles and other historic sites? Many thanks

No, most castles, museums etc are privately owned. Those that are owned by the state are usually free on Sundays to visit and on 'free visiting days' which aren't during the summer vacation period. However, you'll find that churches are free to visit.
Personally, I think a Visitors pass would be a good thing even if it's 10 or 20% off entrance fees; will have to propose this to our new governement.......
