processor speed

I am about to upgrade my laptop and my current processor is Mobile AMD Sempron 300+ 798Mhz 480gb RAM
The one i am thinking of buying is Intel Celeron M processor 520 1.6GHz, 533MHz, 1MB L2 cache

As I know nothing about this type of thing I just want to know if the processor speed will be faster slower or about the same

Both AMD and Intel make inexpensive processors for the cheaper end of the market (usually by having less cache memory as this is expensive).

AMD's cheap CPUs are the Sempron and Intel's cheap CPUs are the Celeron so both the CPUs you listed above are at the slower end of the market.

Having said that the Intel is faster, as from the speed I guess the AMD is 3 or 4 years old.

BUT you cannot just buy an Intel CPU and stick it in a laptop that currently has an AMD.

Intel and AMD have TOTALLY different sockets and number of pins and it just will not fit.

Anyone who builds a PC and wants to buy a Motherboard has to buy one that takes an Intel OR and AMD, you cannot have one that does both.

In fact some motherboards will take only a certain TYPE of Intel CPU, or a certain type of AMD CPU.

It says Socket 754. So it will only fit a motherboard for AMD CPUs with a socket 754.

There are other AMD motherbaords that have AM2 sockets for example.

I am afraid upgrading is a very complex business.

About the only 2 things you can upgrade on a laptop are:

1) Memory

2) Hard disk

Both these are usually fairly easy to upgrade.

Anything else (processor , graphics card etc) is very difficult, if not almost impossible, to upgrade.

When you say "upgrade" I assume you mean "buy a new one"
VHG is almost right in his second post (just read anything else IS impossible).

The Intel will be faster .... but it depends what you intend to do.
Go down to PC world and have a play ... see how fast it feels to you.

I have 2 machines a 3.6ghz p4 and a quad core
..... to be honest most of the time they feel about the same ....... with office, surfing etc etc

When I'm transcoding video ... or playing one of the latest games then the quad flies.
