Tiny Laptop USB

can anyone help?
a friend of mine had full use of her laptop before going to work the other night, came home and now none of the USB ports are working or recognised. it appears her ex has been on the pc, so we don't know if he has done any damage.
is there a full proof way of checking what has gone wrong or is a scapyard job

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Try Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager. The ports might be disabled there, if so enable them. If they show there, but aren't working, try deleting them and rebooting - Windows should spot them and automatically install the drivers. If this fails, you may need to download the appropriate drivers. (Assuming it's not a bad connection inside the machine).
