A pre-trial review is a hearing to determine how long a trial should take so the Court space can be allocated. It also checks that all evidence is ready and all witnesses are available. It can be a long process if identity parades have to be held, forensic evidence has to be gathered, police availability checked etc. Magistrates and Judges also have to be scheduled. There is no point in fixing a trial date if everything is not ready, especially if a lot of people are involved. Once the PTR has shown that everything and everybody is ready the the trial date or dates can be fixed.
