Buying a new computer

Can anyone give me some advice on buying a new computer. I find when you go into shops these days they are full of whizz kids going on about things I have never heard!
What are the main things to ask? I will want to use the internet, store photos a few documents and play to odd game or two. I am a bit of a technaphobic!!!!
What sort of price should I be paying?
I am in my 50's so if anyone can help ( in plain english) I would very much appreciate the help!

i would suggest maybe trying a smaller outlet that thrives on the less knowledgable buyer.

the big chains are on commission to sell you stuff that you dont need and most likely can get for free of the net.

Firstly - know what you want to do with your new computer. It is pointless spending lots of money on a machine that has features you will never use.

It is disappointing to find you computer isn't powerful enough for your needs too.

If you want to play high tec games or do complex video editing you will need a high spec computer. If you want to browse the internet, use spreadsheets, word processors and basic photo imaging then a lower end pc will do.

You need to decide if you want a desktop or a laptop - this is your personal choice. And the size of the monitor.

From the information you have given any on the high street for around �400 will suit you very well.
