public transport to/from Venice
3 Answers
Hello
I'm planning a trip in the winter to Slovenia (Kranjska Gora). We will fly to Venice (marco polo). There will be too many of us to fit in a hire car at the other end, so I want to send two of the group to make their own way. I think our flight arrives about 8pm in Venice. If they could get a train to Tarvisio we could pick them up from there. Any ideas? Or any ideas how I can find out?
thank you......

The official Kranjska Gora website states that the nearest rail station is 20km away, at Jesenice:
http://www.kranjska-gora.si/index.php?i=139
However, the Thomas Cook Rail Map of Europe shows that one of the two possible rail routes passes through Tarvisio, so your plan to collect your friends from there seems to be a good one.
The best website for European rail travel is that of Deutsche Bahn, which includes all European rail timetables in its database:

Alternatively, the Trenitalia site is here:

There's no rail station at Marco Polo airport. You have to take a bus to Venice-Santa Lucia station (which involves a 10 minute walk across the Ponte Degli Scalzi) or to Mestre-Venice station:

The train service seems to be very irregular and journey times vary between about two and a quarter to three and a half hours.

Although I'm a great fan of rail travel, it would seem far easier to hire a people carrier or a minibus from one of these companies:

Even easier (if you've not already booked your flights) would be to forget about using Marco Polo and fly, with Ryanair, from Stansted to Klagenfurt. (It's much closer to Kranjska Gora). Then hire a people carrier or minibus from one of these firms:
