Recently you were veryhelpful about my broadband connection problems. After that weekend,it was back on and working - still don't know why!!! However, as it was not the first time we decided to take the advice to go 'wired' this couldn't be done with our router as only one connction point. Went ahead and bought new netgear router at same time as upgrading my PC including vista. Unfortunately not advised to buy USB adapter then but advised to do so now as alternative to wiring (long distance). Have tried to connect with old adapter and a BT one without success. Would welcome confirmation of this advice from you (Laptop OK)or another AB 'expert'
many thanks

This sort of "just got better" is by no means out of the ordinary ...
I'm still in favour of wire. ... If not actual wire ... the home networking adapters (which use your mains electricity wiring) are becoming more popular as areas become more saturated with wireless - unfortunately it's still relatively pricey compared to a usb thingy .....
A new router AND PC (I assume you hung on to the old hubby?;-)
The latest routers are more reliable.
But unless your old adapter locks on to your new router (good choice btw) immediately. It would be worth going for new USB thingys also.
Whatever they say about compatibility ... the only sure way is to buy everything from the same manufacturer and of the same "family". Otherwise you end up compromising on settings ...

Yes I did hang on to the old hubby (after 50 years a bit late to change now) I have now ordered the USB adapter as currently new PC and laptop OK . Hubby has inherited my old PC (2nd or 3rd time I think) but is somewhat frustrated not to be able to use it online yet. Local man has quoted for wiring now we have suitable router but hopefully this will not be needed if adapter resolves
