Check-in times for flight from UK to USA

On my e-ticket it says I have to check in no less than 3 hours before the flight is due to take off. How stringent are they on this? I thought the desk only opens 3 hours before the flight.

seems pretty standard to me. Most times ive flown to the states they stipulate that you must check in 3 hours before. I went to Florida in March and flew with First Choice and that was only 2 hours beforehand. I have arrived less than three hours before and not had any problems

Last time we arrived 3 hours early, we found that the desk wasnt even open at that time!

Can you check in on line? I have done this the with BA for the last couple of years and have no problems. You don't have to get to the desk to drop your bags until 45 mins before departure (usually), although its obviously best to leave a bit of extra time.

all depends on your airline.
I flew last month with Virgin, who allow on-line check-in, and you can arrive 90mins before scheduled flight time.
otherwise, 3 hours does seem about right.
Just grab a bite to eat, a drink and look around the shops.
plus, boarding takes 30-40mins on these flights.

I flew recently to Miami from Heathow and it took 30 mins queuing to check in then more than one hour to go through security checks, plus called to gate for boarding 45 mins before departure. So that's 2 hours 15mins just for the formalities. If you want to buy a book, duty free etc you are definitely going to need the full 3 hours.

What's the problem? You going to have an extra hour at home and risk not being able to check in? Don't risk the holiday - if they say 3 hours then get there 3 hours before take off!
