I'm off to Jamaica in July and have been looking into the food there. I've read lots about ackee and salt cod, their national dish. But what does ackee taste like?! I'm intrigued...

It's usually described as having the texture and taste of scrambled eggs, however it depends on how it's made and flavored along with th salt cod. It often has overtones of nutmeg or possibly cinnamon. You do know that, incorrectly prepared, it's a potent toxin capable of causing death, don't you? It's banned from import here in the U.S., though it's often smuggled... Best of luck!
Gooey texture, not a lot of taste on its own. Like eggs as C says.

Some Asda stores sell it in cans (as well as in asian s/markets) so try before you go.....

And on the same line as poisoning everybody, potato, tomato and peppers are all members of the deadly nightshade family too..........dont eat the leaves.....
I love ackee and saltfish!
It is a creamy texture and yes it does resemble scrambled eggs.
try it and oh have a nice time!
