Hi I hope someone can help. I tool my Toshiba Satellite 1100 on a business trip, and at one point a colleague threw it into the back of a van (not knowing it was a laptop!) The only thing that seems to be broken is that the screen is so dark that you have to plug in a seperate monitor. The computer works fine. Does anyone have any ideas, or am I going to have to get a new one?

With laptops you tend to find that the cost of getting the screen fixed is almost as much as getting a new one. Have a look in the yellow pages and see if there are any local repair places. it could be just a wire or something more serious with the screen.
Our experience with broken screens (we hire out laptops for use with surveying equipment) is scap it and buy a new one. The cost generally is not worth and we buy the parts etc at trade prices.
Have you got any insurance policies that will cover it? If not, then it seems like you will need to buy a new laptop. As you said it works using another monitor, perhaps you can use it at home by purchasing a new monitor or a used one.. or sell it on ebay, describing it acurately.. E.g. "laptop, screen broken, but will work fine with external monitor"
Alternatively you might be able to find a screen on ebay for it.
It's possible that the backlight has broken, it shouldn't be too expensive to repair.
