Sharpe Novels (Bernard Cornwell) - similar interest

I have read all the Sharpe books by Bernard Cornwell, and enjoyed them. I moved onto his other books and found most of them to be as enjoyable, although probably not as much, with the exception of the Grail Quest series.
Not really bothered about the thrillers he did though.

My question - I need to find another author that I will enjoy as much.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

I loved the Sharpe series of books but found it a bit confusing when he wrote 'Out of sequence' I tried his Campion tale but couldn't get into it. I am currently reading Sue Grafton's Alphabet series -nothing like Sharpe but a steady output of readable novels.I also look forward to the latest Jeffery Deaver book.

If you aren't bothered about thrillers or mysteries and like this sort of thing then the Aubrey / Maturin series by Patrick O'Brian are good or the books by Wilbur Smith ,The 'Ballantyne' Novels and The 'Courtney' Novels. These were my favourites ..I wasn't too keen on his Egyptian ones though .

The Flashman books by George Macdonald Fraser use the same device as Cornwell does with Sharpe: putting a fictional character in real historical settings. Just as I learned an enormous amount about the Peninsular War from the Sharpe books, the Flashman series taught me a lot about Victorian times (the Indian Mutiny, the charge of the Light Brigade and its aftermath, the slave trade, etc.). And Flashman himself is a wonderful character.

If you are looking for similar land based books set in roughly the same time try Allan Mallinson. He has written a series of books set just after Waterloo, the character he uses is in the cavalry. Mallinson is ex army and writes with good authority - slightly more highbrow than Cornwell.
