Skirting Board

Does anyone know the purpose of skirting boards?????!

I always thought that it was so you can send your kids out to find a ladder so that you can paint the skirting board. Or maybe thats just me.

I'm not sure of it's origin. Maybe it's from the Victorian/Georgian days.

It also helps to seal the gap between the wooden floor and the wall.

Without skirting boards I could quite imagine the state of the walls after going around with the hoover a few times.

How big are your skirting boards!? I gererally have to sit down on the floor to paint mine :D

Skirting boards are both decorative and practical, to protect the lower part of your plaster wall which is much softer than the skirting and liable to be damaged more easily.
While in Perth Western Australia, i noticed they no longer fit skitings to new houses because of insect infestation.
