I am flying with Qantas from London to Sydney with a stop off somewhere but my question is what am I allowed to take on board the plane as hand luggage?

Just to back up Steve's answer:

There are now standard regulations, regarding hand luggage, which apply to all flights departing from any EU airport (and from several other countries as well). These apply irrespective of the carrier or destination:

Other countries (e.g. Australia and your stop-over country) may have different regulations but it's likely that you'll meet their requirements if your hand luggage conforms to the EU rules. Here are the rules when leaving Australia:

Be careful about buying souvenirs on your stop-over. Some items are banned from Australia, or must be declared to customs:

Also, you are not allowed to take duty free items bought in UK to Australia. You must either buy them on the aircraft on the second leg of your flight, or at the Sydney Arrivals duty free shop. Another note (from recent experience!); when you fill out your Oz landing card there is a tick box for 'Are you bringing any food into OZ?'. We thought sweets wouldn't count, but they do! You are allowed to take sweets, crisps etc in, but you must say yes. We didn't and got an official warning letter from a stroppy female Polish immigrant customs officer! (PS I have nothing against Poles in general!!) Have a nice flight.
