Diesels are much tougher on oils than petrols, which is why the oil companies all make diesel specific oils, but there are some dual purpose oils.
You need to know what it says on the can: Most oils sold in the UK and Europe have an ACEA rating somewhere in the spec on the side of the can, 'A' ratings are for petrol only, and 'B' ratings are for diesel engines. 'C' rated oils are the dual purpose ones, suitable for petrol and 'light duty' diesel engines.
there are subdivisions within the ratings as well, so if Mr Fastfit can't show you what's on the tin or explain (or indeed, understand...) the ACEA spec system, then go elsewhere, or, better, do it yourself.
