About once a week my landline will ring and I get an automated repeating message ' zone 5 alarm 2'
That's it. What's going on please?
I'm with Virgin Media.

Have you got a house alarm hooked up to a security firm?

See if Virgin can help you with this.
Somebody has an auto dialling system on a fire or burglar alarm. Your number has been programmed by mistake. Not sure if Virgin can help if a withheld number. Probably a similar number to yours though.
That's strange - We're also with Virgin Media & have had a few 'silent' calls since taking over from NTL? I've tried 1471 each time, but number withheld?

Yes Ethel, 1471 declared a withheld number. I don't have that kind of security so BillyBB's answer makes sense .Thanks both.
