Decorating landing and stairs

I have just decorated the landing and stairs. Can anyone suggest an alternative to carpet. The rest of my house has laminate or tiles. The landing is only small 7' x 2'

You can paint or varnish your stairs, but it is not particularly successful because of the heavy wear.

An alternative would be to paint the stairs, and then put a runner on - a carpet narrower than the staircase.

You could use parquet tiling on the landing perhaps.

Hi There Pink,
We went for a coir/reeds/wool mix covering for the stairs and landing. We too have natural woods and slate flooring and I wanted the stairs in as natural a covering as possible.
