How could the answer possibly be MUSES? Even if you can't get your head round the idea of A for B meaning A replaces B, the definition of the answer in a cryptic clue will in 99.9% of cases be at the beginning or the end of the clue, and in those cases where it isn't it is usually preceded by the word "this".
Otherwise the clue makes no sense cryptically.
Well so sorry ichkeria ! Will not bother checking on this site again. Most people are usually gracious and helpful. Still as you say 99.9% of cases.............................
Don't let one pompous poster put you off rmleake, I thought it was quite an ambiguous clue and was glad to have it confirmed. It's always best to check if your not sure, especially if you have spent ages solving the rest of the puzzle.
