how to dead head an amarillas,

I have an indoor plant amarillas, where & how should I dead head this plant

my mum grows them. she breaks off the dead heads then when its finished she stops watering them and lets the stalk die down then keep the pot dry until next spring time and water it again. she gets a good show every year
