WE had our deeds after we paid off the mortgage. My wife lsot them in a spring clean. There was a mass panic when we came to move house and the solicitor asked for the deeds. The solicitor said it would be difficult to get and a lot of hassle. In reality it was dead easy. We went to the Land registry department in Leicester (which covered Northampton) and they got us to go through some application forms. This was on a Thursday. On saturday the new deeds arrived. Amazingly helpful.
Solicitors will also let you keep the deeds free if you use them for your will etc.
Seems an excessive amount. Deeds are only a sheet of 4 - 6 papers. Go to a local solicitor who, if you give him your will to store will hold them free usually. Or simply keep them at home. Even if they are stolen, as previously explained, it is no biggie. Or if you want - for 10 per year I will kepp them for you ;-)
