My new mobile phone providers have told me I can't pay on the 28th of each month. They say there are only certain available dates they can take the money on.

Is this correct? I'm sure it's my right as a consumer to choose the date they debit me?

No, a direct debit means that they can take any amount they want out of your bank account at any time - they are however required to give you 10 days notice.

It is not your right to choose when to pay them.
Direct debits and standing orders can only go out on dates between the 1st and 27th of each month, not every month has the 28th 29th 30th or 31st so you cant make 12 payments on any of these dates.
Erm, every month does have 28 days, doesn't it?
dd's and standing orders can be set up for the 28th 29th 30th & 31st so this is not entirely correct. if that month doesn't contain any of these dates it is debited on the previous day. the bank uses a payment diary code called ldm (last day of month) for most end of month payments, so the payment will be taken on the last day of that month whatever the date. as for the mobile phone company, yes they can take out the direct debit when they want. however their computer will do a tape run to collect all payments on a certain date every month. this collects all bills at once. that is why they will not do this on a date which suits you. it would be causing them more work. hope this helps
