The only way round the problem is to put your tv into timer mode (assuming it has this function)
As far as I am aware you must leave the tv on, which is a backwards step I think, unless your recorder has a digital tuner.

This also means that you can only record the programme you are watching.

If you don't want to buy a twin tuner digital dvd recorder at this stage, a 20 freeview box may be the answer. Then you could record from the box and have the tv either switched off or on another channel.

thank u both for your oh so prompt answers--i already have a freeview box but needed a new tv and thought may as well get one with built in freeview--so i will connect up the box--to be continued--some time later--actually this works out quite well--i now have my dvd rec working thru the box--my tv thru my old vcr so i can now rec 2 digi channel and even watch a terrestrial at the same time--all i need now is the time to watch all the s-h-i-t-- ha ha--thanks again --xx

forgot to say puzzlesrus your timer mode idea is excellent--with my tv connected to the vcr the same problem would arise if i wanted to turn off tv while recording on that--the tv timer is certainly the answer--thanks
