Tiling

Ive just had a new bathroom suite fitted and have paid for the walls to be retiled . The tiler informs me that he is going to tile over the old tiles. Is this ok? Please advise.

I certainly wouldn't allow it!! depends if he priced to remove the old tiles, if not, perhaps you could tell him that you will remove the tiles for him!!

What reason did he give for not removing the old ones first?

He states that if he removes the tiles he will be opening a can of worms, and to trust him it will be a better finnish. I queried if you could do it, but he stated you certainly could.??

Yes it can be done and it does give a good finish, I would guess that the old tiles are direct onto plasterboard, hence his reluctance to take them off, this could indeed cause a lot more work, ie:the plasterboard is more than likely going to have big holes in it once the tiles are removed if the previous tiler used a lot of adhesive, most tilers do remove tiles but in this case if you do want them removed be prepared for more work to be done to walls before tiling can be done, Ray

donna i would go along with ray as long as it is fully tiled (no steps) and is good and sound clean all round then it should be OK beware of any sealers though they could interfere with waterproof flexible adhesive that is the lowest spec you need to use for a good job HTH Tez

Yes it can be done. The argument is sound that if the previous tiler has done his job properly the surface will be level and therefore more prepared for faster job. As a consumer is this what you want - did you make an allownce for this when new suite was put in?

its what i did - just because i'm a bit lazy and also didn't want to hassle of having to fix the plaster board underneath; it looks fine and as the orinignal tiles were done properly its all very level and looks good
