However, I wrote to complain, and (after a few weeks) I was contacted by the area manager and I must say he was extremely courteous and helpful. The upshot was I got 6 months free rental and an upgraded phone, but my advice would be to persist if you are not happy, keep writing and theaten them with the Ombudsman. Keep notes of all conversations and staff names, and be very clear about what you want from them.
The problem is that when O2 was Cellnet it was basically a load of different service companies all working in their own way to BT guideline. The situation is basically the same today - I have to phone my specific service company's number to get customer service. The service you get varies widely from company to company - I don't have any complaints about mine, I've been with them since 1995. There's a list of all the service providers here http://www.o2.co.uk/business/buy/serviceproviders/

I've had a phone with O2(previously cellnet) for 8 years, and apart from having to give them the odd nudge, like when they forget to give me my loyalty bonus, I've had no real problems. If I ever want a free upgrade, I just ask and its no problem. Perhaps you have just been unlucky, or I've been particularly lucky, which knowing big companies, is more probable!
Spot on Kags, I had a problem with a mobile service provider, where they were more than dishonest, and after calling the telecoms ombudsman, the service provider couldn't bend over enough!!!......... Have a peek....... http://www.otelo.org.uk/content.php?menuID=25&page

My boyfriend and I both 'signed' up with O2 after a couple of friends told me how good they were and how many text messages you could have a month at the beginning of 2003. As we were living 3 hours away and did not see each very often it all seemed a good deal. After a couple of months we realised it was very expensive and tried to end the contract. We could not and we also had bad service from them. I know my partner was very upset with them - I paid up to end my contract with them - but he didnt and as a result was threatened with legal action and are now nearing the end of paying them back. It was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever done and I will never go on contract again as I feel that you don't really know what you are getting into. I will stay pay as you go and wish I had never bothered with O2. They say nothing in this life is free and if it sounds too good to be true it usually is. Looking back I also had a friend who used O2 and she often had discrepencies with her statements and I used to phone up on her behalf to sort them out. How short my memory was at the time but when otheres have no problems you just think it is an isolated incident and that is why I was 'conned' into going with o2. I have otherwise always been pay as you go with Tmobile to which I have had no problems and recently had a problem retrieving messages. When I called them they called me back and had the matter sorted within minutes. Now thats a good service!
My phone stopped working for no apparent reason just 2 months into my contract with o2. I took it back to the shop but they didnt want to know. I phoned customer services and they said they'd send me a new phone within a few days, give me free insurance but I'd have to restart my 12 months again. I agreed, but my phone never came. This was a couple of months ago. I tried to cancel under 8.4 but they wouldnt let me. Then when I got my bill they'd charged me insurance! I never got my phone. I cancelled the direct debit payments from my bank account.
