car still on hpi

hi, i bought a car from a man about one month ago and i just did a hpi check on it today ( 12/06/2007 ) and it has come back saying the man i bought it from still owes �7000 on it. i did not know this man as he contacted me via ebays " ask the seller a question" and i asked him if it had any outstanding debt, he said no so we did the deal, i now have found out he was lying and i need to know if i still own this car or do the finance company, i took the man at his word as he seemed very pleasent and friendly.
how do i stand in this situation.

My friend you stand well and truely f*cked.

He got the money and you got a headache. He probably bought the car on a fake identity as well so he is now somewhere buying another one and putting it on ebay.

So if you cant get in touch with him and straighten the situation log on to ebay and try to source him and report it to ebay and the police so that they can catch him. Involving the police would be a good thing to do in order to prevent further fraud.

If all else fails put the car on ebay yourself.

Unfortunately the car is still owned by the finance company, so you can't sell it - it's not yours to sell and they will be wanting it back.....wether you have a V5 or not is meaningless since the V5 records the keeper, which is NOT the same as the owner.

Expect to see the repo man as soon as the finance company track it down. It may be worth seeing a solicitor but really there's very little you can do.

gutted for you mate, have a look here www.goofbay.co.uk its a forum about everything ebay related with some knowledgable people who can find out info not all people can get a hold of, if its a seller and theve registared then they have a address and contact details ive been a member for a while and its a very usefull tool, b the way what was the feedbackscore of the guy in question is he still a member? pass on his ebay name and ill have a look.

He needs tracking down and a few AB'rs to 'persuade' hi8m to give your money back.

If you're like me, i generally don't have much of a pot to pi** in despite working 7 days a week, so my sympathies are with you.
