Charged for unwanted work
We took the wifes car into a local garage because the engine kept trying to cut out. As it was an old car we asked them to have a look at it and let us know how much it would cost. We also said if thet fixed it we would get it ready for its MOT. A week later we rang up to see what was going on and they said it was ready to be picked up and the bill was 230. Worst of it is they haven't fixed the fault, but they have done lots of minor jobs and it passed its MOT. Can they legally charge us for this work?

did you take it to the garage because it was 'cutting out' , and did they say that they would have a look/diagnose & quote - did they do this before seemingly 'taking it upon themselves' to do the other work...??
Either crossed wires or bad comms.
I would speak to them if the above is correct - be firm but fair and keep us posted.
