Samuel from the Bible

Can anyone please tell me in brief, what Samuel did in the bible?

There's a shy quiet polish chap at work who speaks little english but has taken to calling the polish commuter up at all hours telling her he understands his job and that he understands his own name (Gregor) and that he didn't get any sleep at the weekend as he had begun reading the bible and that he understands Samuel... then thanks her and puts the phone down...

It's disturbing, but we think there may be a message somewhere...
