naples to vesuvius

how can we get to vesuvius from naples without having to go on guided coach tour?

Easy peezy

Go to Naples main train station...
Go to the Circumvesuviana ticket booth...
ask for a return ticket to Ercoleno about 4 euros.. maybe less.
when you get off at Ercoleno walk out the steps and to your left there is a small tourist office that will take you up to the highest car park at Vesuvius .by minibus..they will sort out your entrance fee and wait for you to do the trek up and back...and then drop you back at Ercoleno train station...

the price in June was 20 E per person....well worth it as the drive up was a fair distance...

the Trek up to the crater takes between 20 and 30 mins...

Also at Ercoleno there is also the remains of Herculaneum
better preserved then Pompeii but smaller..well worth a visit if you like that sort of stuff.
