What is the relationship between religious belief and armed conflict in the modern world?

Throughout history, religion has been "used" as a reason for humanity to commit horrendous atrocities. The reality is that people cause violence for whatever the reason. I am not a religious person. nor do I belive in god, but the individuals who started most of the religions common in the world to-day would be horrified at the acts commited in the "futherance" of their teachings.
