as no one answered this, I'll tell you what the problem turned out to be. one of the brake pad metal backing plates was BENT! we thought it was hard to get the caliper back on that side when we changed the pads, but assumed it was the handbrake cable pulling against us. when we took the wheel off today, the pads and disc were red hot. don't know how it got bent as its made of 1/4" plate. so bought another set of pads and now all o.k. the man in the shop said we must have put them in wrong, but I reckon you would need a vice and ahammer to bend them!
