Loose cat hair

My tabby cat is approx. 8-9 years old and is still very active and seems pretty healthy. However lately she has been molting terribly. I mean, I know that this time of year is always worse because of the warmer weather, but even when it's been cooler lately, she's been molting. She always has lots of loose hairs on her body and no matter how much I brush her and remove tonnes of hairs there's still tonnes of loose ones there!
They don't seem to bother her but because she's never had it this bad before I wondered if there might be any need to take her to the vets?
Could it be because she is getting older?

how long has she been moulting for? Excessive moulting can be caused by mange, but I think you would know if she had it. It could be hormonal, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or nutritional. But it may be completely normal. If she has been moulting for months, and her skin seems dry of flaky, you may be wise to see your vet, as there could be an underlying problem. Have you de flead her recently, as it could be a flea allergy?

Thanks for your response. I guess it's been going on for about 3 months now. I wouldn't call it excessive but it's more than she's ever moulted before which is why I am concerned.
Her skin all looks healthy enough but maybe by cat's standard's she IS getting on abit now? Maybe it could just be her age?
I've checked her for fleas but nothing. I have just put her on the Purina diet, it's supposed to be very good for older cats, so I'll see how that goes.
I might just see the summer out and if she is STILL moulting in the Autumn then I'll definitely know there is something wrong.
Oh I do hope she's okay though, I love my little cat!
