My 5 year old knows that when people die they go to heaven in the sky and that it's a nice place because the angels are up there with you. She just knows that being dead means she can't see you anymore and that the angels have you now so if they have a smiliar undersatanding I would say that the baby was poorly inside Mummy's tummy and the angels decided he/she should go to heaven and that he/she is very happy up there. Good luck. x
When my daughter had a miscarriage we told her other two girls that the baby was poorly and died , and had gone to heaven and was now a very bright star in the sky at night .when they looked up into the sky that night they would see a very bright star shining on them. This was there baby looking down on them.
Think you've got the right answers there unless you're not happy involving heaven. In that case just use lilac's explanation without mentioning heaven. The bit in "The Lion King" video/dvd when Simba's dad explains about ancestors in the stars may be helpful.
Please give my love and comfort to whoever has lost that chance at motherhood.
