My own tomatoes

My tomato plants which I grew from seed a few months ago are growing taller steadily but I don't see signs of them bearing any fruit! They are about 18 inches tall...how tall should they get? I've secured their stems using canes, and regularly give them tomovite supplements. Am I doing something wrong? Or am I too impatient??!!

Depending on the variety, they can reach anywhere from 4 feet tall to well over 6 feet for some heriloom's. It seems a little late (by our U.S. standards) for no blooms to have appeared by now. I'd suggest keeping them well watered and adding just a little (maybe a teaspoonful per plant) of a good high nitrogen fertilizer. If you only started the plants from seeds say, in April or May, that may be your problem. Here, we start them in March or even late February and they are nearly a foot high by the time they are transplanted in mid to late May. Keep them watered and they should come around... You shouldn't give them any feed until the flowers begin to set - otherwise you stimulate leafy growth at the expense of fruit. So stop feeding them for a bit and don't overwater them - stressing them out a bit will make them produce fruit.

Thanks for the tips, and Figi, that makes sense as I noticed how quickly it started growing when I gave them tomovite, and I watered religiously every day as I keep reading how essential it is that I don't let them dry out. I shall stop the supplements, water a little less and see what happens.
