I have recently had a urinary tract infection. I took amoxycillin antibiotics, but the side effects were so bad I had to stop taking them. I had very bad diaorrhea and felt really really sick. I have the familiar symptoms of anothe UTI and am reluctant to take another antibiotics because of the side effects. Is there an alternative?

Hi clairesdog
Antibiotics can have terrible side effects on some people.
It is not an alternaive but Cranberry Juice can help and also drink lots of water.
You might be better going back to see your GP to get an alternative treatment.
Hope you feel better soon.
Diaorrhea is a very common side effect of penicillin. As cruella says you need to talk to your Doctor. Would you not have been better going back to your Doctor at the time and explaining why you had not finished your course of amoxycillin. He/she may then have been able to prescribe something else.
Not sure why doc has given amoxicllin, that is what is known as broad spectrum antibiotic for things like tonsilitis and abbcess. UTI's usually have a specific antibiotic called trimethropin. pop to doc's and ask for that.
other than that water, water and more water.
I was getting urinary infections constantly for about 12 months and then bought cranberry tablets from Boots, one every morning and I have been clear for 18 months now

Thanks for your replies. I took the amoxicillin as I was away from home staying in a remote area for a week and my partner had been given amoxicillin after an extraction. On medical advice I took the amoxicillin as an emergency measure until I could see my own GP.
Anyway I went to my own doctor yesterday who prescribed trimethoprim, to stop the remaining bacteria multiplying, unfortunately I must be super sensitive to antibiotics, as I do have some side effects,(nausea & stomach pain) although not as severe and only for about an hour, although I am told these will be milder if I can take my tablets with some food.
