Is the common house fly able to fly upside down, or does it do a quick back flip prior to landing on the ceiling?

They can't fly upside down, the 2 wings make a forward and backward motion pushing down the air and so producing upward thrust. They throw them selves sort of straight up and grab the ceiling with the first 2 legs, then pull themselves completely upside down.
What a good question, as a pest controller for 13 years I'm surprised I never thought to ask that question, it just never occurred to me!!! lol
