Finally! 4-month old son has just done his first poo since last Tuesday.
Doctor said last week during a regular check-up not to worry and that Brits worried too much about pooing!

My question is... when should you start worrying about lack of poo?!

after a week definately. I have this problem all the time and I'm not constipated with just dont feel the need to go. i'd imagine after a week all the muck in the stomach goes manky and they start throwing up. have you tried giving your baby a teaspoon of pure orange juice when it needs to go to the toilet. this what I was told to do when my daughter was a baby. I suppose if we drank nothing but milk we'd get pretty bunged up as well. Nice eh!
I would say a baby not having a poo for 6 days is something to be concerned with! The poor little chap must have been so uncomfortable, if not in pain, with having been for so long. I think I would start getting concerned after a couple of days.

In future bongerman, go straight to your health visitor with problems like this, forget the doctor!

That was the funny thing - he hasn't been in pain or discomfort - he's a really healthy baby otherwise.

Here's a punchline though - like London buses, he's now just produced his second of the day!!
Before she started on solids Emmy only ever went once a week, but did she go!
Breastfed babies especially dont go as often so its not a worry unless there is discomfort
lol bongerman.........the 3rd will be along shortly!!
I wouldn't worry too much, unless it seems like he's in pain and as long as he wees frequently i don't think it matters if babies don't go for a week.
I'm not sure about orange juice for a small baby though, i thought it was best to wait until they were six months before weaning them and that would include orange juice. After this age though pure squeezed orange juice does work well for constipation.
Hello bongerman,
My two babies were regular as clockwork sometimes twice a day. But from birth I gave them a small bottle of cool boiled water at about lunch time (only once a day). In the very early days it was only maybe 1 oz but it was enough to keep things moving as it were. Boots used to do a tiny 1oz bottle. My health visitor recommended juice too but I didn't like the sound of something so acidic mixing with the milk, I just imagined it curdling in their tummy. Plus if you can get him to drink water now and not turn his nose up at it you'll be on a winning streak for later. p.s I did have trouble getting them to take it at first when it was cooled so I just made sure it was as warm as baby milk and they were fine.
you know your baby best though....
I'm glad we're not the only ones

My son hasn't gone since 4am Saturday morning. We called NHS Direct and our health visitor and the message is constant - don't worry.

You can see that he is trying sometimes and he often breaks wind. Other than this he seems comfortable.

I still wish he'd just do a pooh though.
If the baby is happy with once a week, enjoy it! As i said Emmy was once a week until the day we started weaning, and now its up to 6 poohs a day! Yuck!
