On our local news today there was a woman who threw a kitten up & down the stairs several times then shot it through the eye with an air rifle. It was all filmed on a mobile. It was shown on the news & my daughter saw it.Surely they could refrain from actually showing it?

Look at it this way. When we were brought up our parents taught us right and wrong and we learnt values. Nowadays kids are just left to their own devices without reprimand as mothers/fathers are "too busy" or just can't be bothered. So out on the streets they go shooting cats, pigeons you name it for "fun" Then they grow up to be like this person with no regard for life or become fox hunters, pheasant shooters, join illegal **** fighting, hare coursing etc etc. Let your children see this - it will hopefully remain in their minds and ultimately spread the word about these horrible practices.

This is a dreadful case of cruelty, but just for accuracy's sake, the woman referred to in the question did not perptrate the crime as described in the question. A man has already been sentenced for that. The following links should make things clearer.

Only just noticed this thread hau kola.
This is indeed a terrible, evil crime! I really don't understand how any human being can be so cruel to animals. Whatever do they get out of it?
It's bad enough parading Bears around in front of people & making them box - let alone the physical harm done to them too.

It is interesting to note that 17 hours after I have pointed out (above) that this dreadful woman did not do this crime that all the people who were quick to call for her to be shot are strangely slow in acknowledging their mistake.
Maybe Panic Button, stewey, Neilzulu1 and of course hau kola who wrongly accused her in the first place think she should be shot anyway?
if ever there was an argument against capital punishment...

Don't you think TV programmes get more and more gruesome? I think the make-up or props depts try to outdo one another. Think Prime Suspect and then more recently Wire in the Blood, even Caroline Quentin's series started last night with a gang beating and kicking a man then urinating on him. Next shot, a gaping skull in the lake. The stories too, get more horrific, routinely involving abduction of children and their subsequent murder. Then the obligatory mortuary scene. Is this entertainment? I think it has an influence on certain vulnerable people and violence on animals often escalates to violence on people.
