Barclaycard have just written advising me they are transferring me to a Platinum card which I don't want as the card number will change and I'll have to advise all the people I do business with and my Card Protection providers. Can they force me to upgrade? Has this happened to anybody else? I'm not sure what extra benefits a Platinum card would provide as I'm a light user and pay my balance off in full every month.

They can change your card number any time they like just by sending you a new card and expiring the old one after a short overlap.

Happened to me several times, though not with Barclaycard.

So I'd say yes they can.
My wife has also just received her new upgraded Platinum card. This is an unrequested upgrade which changes her number and increases her credit limit. This to me is sharp practice at best, and presents a significant risk by sending out a valid card without any pre notification. The useless indian call centre were unable to give any advice. What gives them the right to force the change - I wouldn't expect my bank to change my account number and I wouldn't expect BT to change my phone number - especialy without any advance notice.
