red insects invade hair

My mum came back from a visit to the hairdressers with some red insects on her head which are making her scalp itch badly. She keeps having to wash her hair and change the bedding but they are still there. I've suggested that she buys something from the pharmacy. Does anyone know what these insects could be?

Sounds like nits to me. Most chemists have loads of stuff for this.

That's a new one on me and Ive worked with most species that infest people or are a public health pest!! are you sure they are insects and not just red blood spots, maybe an allergic reaction to something at the hairdresser?

They are called redhead mites. I get them as well, and they are persistent. You have to scratch them out at night and hoover up the bodies in the morning. They are harmless, messy but no worse thatn recalcitrant bogies.

Mine aren't chiggers. They crawl around a bit but are easily squashed which is why you need to keep your hair short - good scheme a visit to the hairdresser - also wash it weekly, and as noted, keep the Dyson by the bed otherwise they get between your toes.
