Worst - falling in the Leeds/Liverpool canal as a child
2nd worst - falling off the top of a very tall boat in Turkey. As I was going down deeper & deeper my last thought was how sound - namely Mr Overall's laugh - could travel underwater.
3rd worst - after watching Jaws I went to Barbados on hols and saw the shadow of a huge shark (well...about 12 inches long) underneath me
Best - swimming in the Red Sea and being surrounded by wild dolphins

Sorry I am going to be really, really boring. I swim at a local pool several times a week and these are the best and worst swims. The worst when I really do not want to go and I make myself, all because now and again I get the equivalent of a joggers high and I feel like I could swim forever. Yes swimming in the Med, Aegean, Caribbean, all lovely but nothing like the high I occasionally get and constantly want more of. Not better than sex but one of those physically memorable experiences that we live for.
In an open air geothermal pool in Husavik on the north coast of Iceland. I would swim there for free every morning at 7am. The water was heated by magma from just below the ground and it was piped continually into the pool. The water was so full of sulphur that it smelled of rotten eggs and really cleared my head. It was so hot that the whole pool was enveloped in steam. Visibility was just a few feet and when I was in the middle of the pool I couldn't see the sides. Other swimmers would suddenly loom out of the sulpherous steam and then disappear again.
Most enjoyable was getting out of the pool to cool off. I would then stand in just my trunks watching the icebergs on the Arctic Ocean just the other side of the fence. Once I started to cool down, I would dive back into the heat and steam of the pool.
Terrific. Much better than our local Civic.
